While the psychotherapeutic world has made significant strides in documenting the treatment of women victims of sexual abuse, little has been written on therapeutic responses to men. This may be understood as being partly due to the reluctance of male survivors to expose their history of abuse to clinical eyes. This may be exacerbated by a particular brand of masculine shame that causes male victims to be even more silenced than female survivors. This book will use a psychodynamic perspective to examine the therapeutic needs of men who have experienced sexual abuse in childhood or as adults. It will draw on the author's experience of working with male survivors in individual and group treatment, alongside his expertise as a supervisor and consultant to individuals and organisations working in the field. It will be aimed at psychotherapists, counsellors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and others in the mental health field and will also be of interest to male survivors and those caring for them. The book comes at a pivotal time, as the incidence and impact of the sexual abuse of boys and men is beginning to gain recognition in the therapeutic and wider world.
