Narrative Therapy Approaches for Physical Health Problems

This textbook is a blend of practical and theoretical ideas, from the exciting and evolving approach that is narrative therapy. It endeavours to talk about the application of narrative therapy ideas and principles to working with the effects of living with a physical health condition. Each chapter will draw on theories, ideas, practices and questions that currently inform narrative therapy. However the text will also be peppered with clinical examples: to support and encourage the reader to put these ideas into practice. This text will enable readers to literally 'pick up and use' each method, as it is carefully and comprehensively explained. It is hoped that by structuring each chapter as such, the authors will be able to support the direct application of these ideas in a way that preserves the fidelity of narrative therapy.Thus it is a book for counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapeutic workers, student therapists and people in the social work or nursing professions, who are working therapeutically with children and adults with physical health problems. The text looks at situations where health concerns have served to 'shrink' possibilities for living, or narrowed conclusions drawn about the person's identity to the detriment of people's quality of life.
