Several philosophical as well as theological concepts of bioethics argue that the human body as such is the basic norm of medical ethics. However the privileged position of the human body is never considered as an issue for ethics. Within the phenomenological tradition, it remains forever unclear how any specifically moral obligations could be derived from the emphatic encounter with one s own and the other s body. Ulrich Körtner has argued that the constitutive significance of our being embodied becomes ethically relevant only insofar as that significance is integrated into a moral philosophical or theological ethical framework theory, which might be the concept of responsibility. From a theological perspective Körtner analyses the fundamental ethical issues concerning the embodiment of human beings and their natality, the concept of illness / disease and health, the role of the body in pastoral care, the concept of person in the case of persistent vegetative state, the experience with our own body in old age, and bioethical issues in dealing with the human corpse.
