There is in Boston a large population which speaks some one of those languages as their mother tongue. All will feel that it is for the public benefit, that this class of our citizens should have the means of improving their minds in common with the rest of the public. There is also a large and steadily increasing class of our native population, who read foreign languages, and who stand in especial need of the aid of a public library in procuring books, for the very reason that works in those languages are less abundant and less easily obtained from pri vate sources.
