Xunzi (fl. 3rd century BCE) is generally regarded by scholars as one of the greatest Confucian thinkers in early China, and in terms of the sophistication of his thought, some have likened his position within the Confucian tradition to that of Aristotle among the Greek philosophers. Xunzi's views on topics such as human nature, ritual, music, ethics, and politics potentially make him of interest to many. Although appreciation of Xunzi has been growing over the past few decades, Xunzi's thought is not as widely known in the West. This is because the views of his rival Mengzi (Mencius) came to be dominant in later Chinese history. The present volume uses a variety of disciplinary perspectives to provide a comprehensive and in-depth introduction to his thought, his relations to other early thinkers, and his influence in East Asian intellectual history. It aims to make Xunzi's thought accessible to a wide range of readers, while also advancing scholarly literature on Xunzi.
