Aided Augmentative Communication for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders is an essential resource for professionals to assist them in determining what types of systems are available for promoting functional communication in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and complex communication needs (i.e., those who cannot speak or whose speech is unintelligible). In particular, the volume focuses on aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Aided AAC provides learners with tools needed to supplement or replace speech that they are unable to use effectively. Such tools are particularly important for this population who, if they are unable to communicate effectively, often display challenging behaviors (e.g., tantrums, aggression). Aided Augmentative Communication for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders provides an overview of how AAC may be used to benefit individuals with ASD who lack functional communication skills and have complex communication needs. Aided and unaided AAC is described briefly and guidelines for assessing the need for AAC and for determining what type of AAC may be most suitable for their clients and students are provided. Several types of aided AAC are presented in depth, along with an overview of each intervention, resources, and research in support of the intervention. Types of AAC covered include evidence-based aided language stimulation, functional communication training, the Picture Exchange Communication System, speech-generating devices, and other visual supports for communicating with individuals with ASD. Finally, the volume addresses two controversial issues in the field and provides guidance regarding making related decisions. This much-needed information is particularly timely, given that this field has seen an explosion of research during the past 10 years.
